A Star Inside

There’s a star inside
That has long ago died
Just a big empty space that’s
Never full
No matter how hard I try
If I look low or high
I know that nothing
Ever will

I am broken
Too much that needs
To be spoken
I am shattered
Adrift all at sea
Being battered
I am empty
There’s nothing left here
To tempt me

So myself I hold
To try to beat this cold
Fanning these dead embers
For some light
And I strain to hear
If someone else is near
I speak but my words are
Never right

I am broken
Too much that needs
To be spoken
I am shattered
Adrift all at sea
Being battered
I am empty
There’s nothing left here
To tempt me

Others shine so bright
They light up this endless night
Their shining stars within
Embracing all
To be like them I yearn
But if I’m close I burn
So I sit and wish with all
Of my soul

I am broken
Too much that needs
To be spoken
I am shattered
Adrift all at sea
Being battered
I am empty
There’s nothing left here
To tempt me

And then the dark is torn
As my star is being born
I shade my eyes against this
Strange new light
What will I now behold
As my new chapter unfolds
I embrace it with wonder
And delight

No longer broken
So much to give
And I’ve spoken
No longer shattered
I navigate this sea
And I’m elated
No longer empty
So much beauty here
And it’s fed me

There’s a star inside
I feel my starlight so alive

If I Said I Love You

If I said I love you
You’d go away
Just up and leave and
Never stay

If I said I love you
You’d stop and stare
Like I said something horrid
Or had snakes for hair

If I said I love you
I’d be alone again
You’d distance yourself
And I’d lose another friend

If I said I love you
Let’s get real
It doesn’t matter
What I think or feel

If I said I love you
But now you are here
So I close my mouth
And hope against fear

Then I said I love you
Await the inevitable groan
You smile and say I love you too
And I am not alone?

I said I love you
Wait for you to go away
Make some excuse
And yet you choose to stay

I said I love you
Long to embrace this light
To bridge the yawning chasm
That stills the flowing fright

I said I love you
But fear still holds my hand
I share my heart with you
So you will understand

I say I love you
Despite what may occur
I confront my raging demons
Till they lay back and purr

Lammas Eve Lughnasadd

For Lughnasadd
For Lammas Eve
We’re standing here
With powdered sleeve
We knead this bread
This bread we knead
For Lughnasadd
For Lammas Eve

For Lammas Eve
For Lughnasadd
We’ve blessed this bread
With breath of Maat
With earth and water
Coven and hearth
For Lammas Eve
For Lughnasadd

It’s Lughnasadd
It’s Lammas Eve
And we’re all off
To Lammas Feast
With bread to share
And songs to weave
It’s Lughnasadd
It’s Lammas Eve

Shadow Dance

I set fire to my shadow and watched it burn
The fire set free a rose
It blossomed and died and budded again
Through the blue-gold flame
Petals turning black

I set fire to my shadow and watched it dance
Life’s bright spark
Illuminating all around it
It’s blaze alighting others
Coming together in one blissful union

I set fire to my shadow and watched it rise
Grow wings and fly high up
Climb stars and pass strange worlds
Glimmering and winking
From the inky black ash

I set fire to my shadow and watched it smolder
With hidden passions and smothered anger
Barely contained and swelling within
Glaring darkly from behind
Thickly hooded eyes

I set fire to my shadow and watched it
Embraced it
And set it free
And I wondered
What change is in stall for me

Footprints

I see the footprints
In the air
And know the time for you to leave
Is near

I really don’t want to
Let you go
But I can’t keep you
Here, I know

You have to go and
Chase your star
It’s blinking and shining up
There so far

How can I tell you how
Much I care
Or that I really will miss you
Being there

For I see footprints
In the air
And know the time for you to leave
Draws near

You say that it is not
Good bye
You will not forget me but
Your words lie

Without meaning to you will
Forget
That I am here, what we shared
And kept

They will fade away and
Disappear
I know that yet can’t keep
You here

For I see footprints
In the air
And know the time for you to leave
Is here

Beauty

I gaze with wonder
At the beauty of a tree
Yet no matter how
Hard I try to see
I am never able
To see beauty in me

It’s party the word
For beauty is tainted
With barbs and thorns
With acid it’s painted
And it still burns,
Stings, is never sated

I’ve been called that
Since the age of five
Called beauty meaning ugly,
Boring, fat, uninspired
Meaning we hate you
Why don’t you just die?

I’ve tried to reclaim it
It use it with love
Embrace its true meaning
Send it off like a dove
To bring peace to my life
Here, below and above

But then I remember
What answer was given
To one who asked why
Such a name in derision
‘Because she’s so ugly’
Those words are still risen

Being with friends
Who wanted to know
What I thought of me
Hid under the bed so
They could record and replay
But my voice was too low

I was told that I should
Want to beat myself up
That to think anything else
Was just arrogant fluff
As for wearing bright colours?
Good grief, no. Enough!

And so here I am
There is only me
No ghostly remembrances
Or derisive glee
Surely now I am able?
Beauty can see?

From the Dark of the Woods

From the dark of the wood
Stepped he
With hair of flax and
Clothes of green
And with wicked eye
And joyful grin
Said ‘how nice of you
To wander in’

Out reached his hand
With fingers lean
And a glow from within
Somehow unseen
A gold harp he plucked
It’s tune let sound
To flow up and in
And all around

Enveloped in
Warm and snug
Wrapped around
Like a favoured rug
Whose presence eases
Strife and pain
And teases in love
Once again

At this beautiful
Creature I gaze
Mind at rest
Yet in a haze
Of breathless wonder
And quiet atone
My mark ablaze
Their eyes my own

I look at him
And I am home

His Challenge

Are you willing
Or will you be taken
For I am here
And I’m coming for you

Hoof and horn or teeth
Which will be forsaken
For I am here
And I’m coming for you

Look into my eyes
Such places I’ll take you
For I am here
And I’m coming for you

Walking through the woods
Will it heal or break you
For I am here
And I’m coming
For you.

Beneath Your Feet

I am
Beneath your feet
I am
In your heartbeat
I am
The bugs and bone
I am
The soil and stone

I am
Beneath your feet
I am
In your heartbeat
I am
The tree that grows
I am
The thorny rose

I am
Beneath your feet
I am
In your heartbeat
I am
The crops you reap
I am
The food you eat

I am
Beneath your feet
I am
In your heart beat
I am
The clothes you wear
I am
The flesh you tear

I am
Beneath your feet
I am
In your heartbeat
You are
A part of me
So open your eyes
And you’ll see that

You are
Beneath my feet
